Wedding Dresses: No Pain, No Gain?

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

As a bride, in choosing your wedding dress, you want to look your best in the bridal gown and will be willing to make certain sacrifices for it. The question is that is it really necessary? After all, women have thrown out the whalebone corset a long time ago and comfort need not be given up for beauty.

A Lifetime Decision

In choosing from the thousands of wedding dresses available from thousands of designers, there are a few things that you should remember. First and foremost is that just because it looks good on the model or mannequin, it does not mean it will look good on you, or vice versa. Second, you will be in that dress for the better part of the day or night, and you would not want to remember your wedding day as the day you looked great but felt so uncomfortable.

Tricking the Eye

While it is true that most brides will look their prettiest in their wedding gowns because of the natural glow and beauty of happiness, a little help from a few fashion tricks will not hurt anybody. There are designs that draw the attention towards what you think are your best features. A low cut dress to show off beautiful shoulders, or knee length ones that show off the shapely legs.

There are also wedding dresses that are designed to “correct” body types, like if you feel that you need to shorten the way your torso looks, you could opt for the empress cut on your dress. The main point is that you should get an unbiased opinion of what your body type is, and ask around which design would look good on it. You don’t want to end up with ruffles in places that need not be emphasized.

Getting Comfortable

The comfort factor in wedding dresses does not rely mainly on the design but on how well it fits you. Even if you are getting a wedding dress straight off the rack (which really is a good idea because you can already see what the dress looks like in reality), you should not wear it straight off the rack. Have it altered and give it a dry run and imagine yourself if you can survive in that dress for at least eight hours. While you’re at it, do the same for your wedding shoes.

Another alternative that some brides take advantage of is to have different dresses, one for the walk down the aisle and another for the wedding reception after. This is also probably one of the reasons why many wedding dresses survive the wedding party. You can have the “reception” dress patterned after the “ceremony” dress, but in a simpler version.

Wearing White

Tradition dictates that wedding dresses are white, and according to Ms. Manners, everyone has the right to wear one. That doesn’t mean that you cannot get married in anything but. If you really feel that white is just not your color, then pick one in the color that you think suits you better.

Dressing For The Wedding Party

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

When you’re invited to a wedding ceremony, unless you are the bride, you are either part of the wedding entourage or just one of the special people chosen to witness such a memorable event. If you are part of the latter, then, you’d also definitely feel the pressure of finding the perfect dress to wear on that special day. Well, girls will be girls, right?

But will you go and rummage your closet for the perfect dress or would you spend money on getting a new frock? More ladies would opt for the latter. You’ll take your friend’s or your family member’s wedding as an excuse for scouting for evening dresses. But out of the many designs of evening dresses available, both displayed in your favorite shop or on the Internet, how do you know which one to pick? Here are a few suggestions.

Get into the Motif

Guests and visitors who are not part of the entourage need not “take part” of the wedding motif. However, since you’re already there, why not be in line with the motif? It’s another excuse to buy a new dress, right? Upon receiving the invitation, you’d immediately ask for the theme or the motif of the wedding. This will surely excite you, especially if you don’t have a gown that fits the theme, because you are setting yourself to another evening dresses quest. You can ask your girlfriends or your boyfriend to go with you in search for the perfect dress on a Venetian-red-wedding ceremony, for example.

Go for Comfort

Needless to say, you must also come to the party feeling comfortable about yourself and about what you are wearing. Therefore, this must be one of your criteria, if not the most important criterion, in looking for the best evening dresses.

For example, if you are not comfortable with going bra-less or using strapless bra, then don’t choose a strapless evening gown. Otherwise, you would look funny with your bra straps visible. If you’re not comfortable with a short dress, then don’t get one just because that gown looks fabulous on you. You run the risk of constantly pulling it down during the entire ceremony. Comfort is not only applicable to evening dresses. See to it that you’re comfortable with your shoes as well. It’s a no-no to wear your new shoes for the first time during the wedding, or any special occasion. You’d end up having blisters and limping while walking to the reception. As there are traditional activities that are carried out during the reception, the need for wearing a comfortable evening dress and a pair of shoes is paramount.

Get into Your Purpose

No, I’m not talking about stealing the groom away. Wearing a dress has a purpose other than covering yourself. Before you choose from a myriad of choices of evening dresses, ask yourself: what is my purpose? Am I to flaunt my curves or am I going for elegance?

If you’re heavy-busted and you want to flaunt that asset, for example, then evening dresses with low neckline would work best for you. This is a gaze-turner especially if you’re looking for a potential partner. However, if you just want to stay on the sidelines and not attract too much attention, then elegance is the name of the game. Black is still the most elegant color but in some countries, guests are forbidden to wear evening dresses of this shade. Remember, try not to overshadow the bride. Don’t steal her thunder. This is still her wedding day and the fact remains: she is and she must be the most beautiful lady in the room.

Choosing A Bridesmaid Dress

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Few stories about horrible bridesmaid dresses have been floating around. You probably have read such tales. As a bride, it is then part of your numerous duties to make sure that the bridesmaid dresses are anything but horrible. Yes, in the wedding planning, your primary concern should be wedding dresses (petite or plus size wedding dresses). But given that your bridesmaids are among your closest girlfriends, you should make sure as well that you have devoted enough time in choosing those bridesmaid dresses.

Choose the right color and style of dress for your wedding

So, how do you choose bridesmaid dresses? Here are a few pointers:

All About Color

Sometimes, the trickiest part of choosing bridesmaid dresses is the color. Although usually this is aligned with the motif, sometimes, the chosen color is not really that stunning when made as dresses. So, to prevent becoming part of the statistics in “ugly bridesmaid dresses,” give the selection process some thought. If your wedding is a very formal event, you could always go with black bridesmaid dresses. Black is a very elegant color and it looks good on anyone. Moreover, it is flattering, regardless of the cut of the gown. It is also very slimming, so your bridesmaids won’t worry about their extra “curves.”

All About Comfort

Comfort is perhaps the most important factor to consider when choosing bridesmaid dresses. You have to make sure that your bridesmaids will be comfortable wearing these gowns. Otherwise, regardless of the design and the color of the gowns, these dresses will always look awkward on the other beautiful single ladies in your wedding party. Comfort does not refer to style – tube, spaghetti-straps, haltered. After all, ladies today are comfortable wearing those styles. Instead, this refers to the fitting of the gown. Too tight or too loose isn’t only horrible to the eyes, but it is also stressful to the wearer. This fact then calls for tailored fit bridesmaid dresses. Go for perfect fit – and length. That way, your bridesmaids would have nothing to worry about besides looking radiant as they walk down the aisle.

All About the Season

It is also a great idea if you let your bridesmaids dress for the season. Wedding experts recommend darker shades of gown if you are getting married on a cool season. Otherwise, go for lighter shades. For a summer wedding, for instance, choose bridesmaid dresses that are on the champagne shade. You could even go towards the white family. Not only will your bridesmaids look neat on these, but they will also feel cool and comfortable.

Be sure to choose a dress that is comfortable for your bridesmaids

Finally, it is your wedding and it will ultimately be your decision. You are still the one person that can give the go signal on which color or design to choose for the bridesmaid dresses. Still, it does not hurt to consider the side of your bridesmaids. It does not hurt to ask their thoughts and consider their preferences. You may not be able to please all of them, but at least you tried. After all, they are among your closest friends and family members and they certainly deserve fabulous bridesmaid dresses!

Just “I Do” It

Who says wedding shoes have to be uncomfortable to be stylish? Not this bride. We all desire a very fashion forward style of shoe for our big day and know that it will come at the price of our tootsies. We all have been to weddings where the bride is seen wearing these amazing heels only to take them off and wear flip-flops the rest of the party. Well now Cole Haan bridal shoes have come up with three new shoe designs that look stylish and incorporate Nike Air technology. That’s right… now you too can be like Mike, well sort of, and enjoy the comforts of a Nike Air shoe with your bridal shoe. What makes these bridal shoes unique is their ingeniously concealed Nike Air technology in the heel and forepart. Judging from the photos, you could never tell these shoes held a special comfortable secret. We’ll just keep that between you and me. Anyone out there wore these shoes? I wonder if they really feel “Nike Air” comfortable. Still, any effort to keep us looking pretty in heels and not in pain gets my vote.
